Ovintiv produces oil and gas across several basins in the United States and Canada.
The portfolio is spread across acreage with different economics: Texas oil provides the revenue, Canadian gas acreage the volume and an option on higher gas prices. That spread allows moving rigs to wherever is currently more profitable rather than drilling to a plan regardless of prices.
A shale well delivers most of its output in the first year or so, so volume has to be replenished by continuous drilling and the share of spending on maintaining production is high. After a decade of unprofitable growth the industry limits drilling and returns cash to shareholders. Risks: oil and gas prices, the quality of remaining acreage, contractor costs. A dividend is paid.
