Performance Food Group supplies restaurants and also stocks the shops at filling stations.
The first half is ordinary wholesale food delivery to restaurants: purchasing scale and route density decide everything, because the margin is measured in percentage points. A distinct bet is on independent venues: less attractive by volume but paying more per item and negotiating less than chains.
The second half is unusual — stocking filling station shops with cigarettes, drinks and snacks. That is enormous turnover at a tiny mark-up, but delivery frequency is high and routes are dense. Risks: food inflation, fuel, driver shortages and declining smoking, which erodes the tobacco part of turnover. The company pays no dividend.
