Curtiss-Wright makes components for nuclear reactors, submarines and aircraft — parts it is easier not to change.
The products are embedded in systems where failure is unacceptable: reactor pumps and actuators, control electronics, sensors. Qualifying a supplier for the navy or a nuclear plant takes years and requires separate licences, so replacing one mid-programme is almost never attempted.
Demand comes from three sources with different cycles: naval shipbuilding, where programmes are scheduled decades out; servicing operating nuclear plants; and civil aviation. A distinct story is interest in small modular reactors, for which the company already supplies equipment. Risks: defence budgets and other people's programme schedules. The dividend is small.
