Fabrinet assembles optical modules to other people's designs — the contractor through which much of the optics for data centres passes.
An optical transceiver is assembled by hand to micron precision: aligning laser and fibre does not lend itself to simple automation. The company built its manufacturing in Thailand, where the combination of skilled labour and its cost makes such assembly economically sensible.
The customers are designers of optics and networking equipment who engineer the product but do not want to build a factory. Demand rose sharply along with data centre construction: training models requires enormous bandwidth between servers. Risks: customer concentration, a change of optical generation and the geography of a single manufacturing site. The company pays no dividend.
