LyondellBasell produces polypropylene and polyethylene — the plastics half the objects around us are made of.
This is an undifferentiated commodity, and price is set by the global balance of demand and capacity. The industry lives in long cycles: a wave of new plants crushes margins for years, then demand catches up. The market is now in the lower part of such a cycle because of capacity built in China and the Middle East.
The advantage comes from feedstock: American units run on cheap gas-based feed, European ones on oil. The company is closing its least efficient assets, including refining, and investing in recycling plastic waste, where regulation creates demand. Risks: how long the trough lasts and whether the high dividend survives it.
