Penske Automotive owns car dealerships — premium ones in America and Britain — and truck dealerships.
Selling a new car earns a dealer little: the mark-up is compressed and competition is transparent. The money is made alongside — on used cars, on servicing and repair, and on insurance and finance products arranged at the sale. Service is especially valuable: it earns for a decade after the sale.
The portfolio is weighted to premium brands, whose buyers are less sensitive to loan rates. A separate part is a heavy truck dealer network, dependent on freight and construction. Risks: vehicle availability from manufacturers, interest rates and brands moving to direct sales without a dealer. A dividend is paid and raised.
