Ralph Lauren sells an American style as a brand and has spent recent years raising price rather than volume.
The brand was nearly devalued by its own success: clothing moved through outlets and department stores at a discount, and shoppers stopped paying full price. The turnaround took years — cutting the share of marked-down sales, closing surplus locations, investing in owned shops and the website.
The logic is simple and hard to execute: fewer items at a higher price are more profitable than more items at a discount, but it requires patience and forgoing revenue today. International growth, above all in Asia, adds volume. Risks: fashion, currency rates, import tariffs and the discretionary nature of clothing spending. The company pays a dividend and buys back stock.
