Arrow Electronics resells electronic components to equipment makers — a wholesaler with enormous turnover.
A device maker needs thousands of different chips and parts from dozens of suppliers, and setting up a relationship with each is uneconomic. The distributor holds stock, extends payment terms and carries the risk of unsellable inventory. The mark-up is measured in percentage points, so volume and turnover decide.
A distinct value is engineering support: advising which component will fit and what to substitute for one that has gone out of production. That ties the designer in for the product's whole life. The industry lived through a hard cycle: after a shortage, customers stockpiled and stopped ordering for years. Risks: the inventory cycle, working capital and manufacturers moving to direct sales. The company pays no dividend but buys back stock.
