Lam Research makes etch and deposition equipment — the step without which neither memory nor logic can be built.
The company is strongest in memory manufacturing: as structures go multi-layer, the number of etch steps grows faster than density itself, which works as a structural tailwind. Logic and leading-edge nodes are the second line, where competition is tighter.
Revenue follows fab construction and retooling decisions rather than chip demand, so the cycle here is sharper: the year capacity comes online looks very different from the next. Servicing the installed base — spares, upgrades, field service — smooths those swings, and its share grows with the number of tools in the field.
The dominant external factor is US export control on advanced equipment to China, historically a large buyer. Lam pays a dividend and buys back stock actively, which for cyclical equipment is explained by consistently high margins.
