Donaldson makes filters for engines and industrial equipment — a consumable replaced on schedule.
A filter costs little, but its absence ruins an engine or a machine, so replacement happens on schedule and is not deferred. The original sale to an equipment maker matters not for its own sake but so that the filter is written into the service manual: after that it is bought for years.
That structure gives resilience: new equipment sales are cyclical while consumable replacement continues regardless of whether new machines are bought. The growing part is industrial filtration for chip, food and biologics manufacturing. Risks: the agricultural and construction cycles, steel and filter media prices. The dividend has been raised for many consecutive years.
