Guidewire makes core systems for property insurers: writing a policy, billing it and settling a claim.
An insurer lives inside such a system entirely: the rate is calculated in it, the policy is stored in it, the claim file is kept in it. Replacing it is a multi-year project with a risk of halting sales, so the decision is made once a generation and the customer stays for a long time.
The industry ran on in-house systems for decades, and the shift to packaged platforms is still not finished — hence a long runway. The company is moving customers from perpetual licences to cloud subscriptions, which temporarily worsens reported results while making revenue recurring. Risks: implementation timelines and insurers' budgets. The company pays no dividend.
