Jazz Pharmaceuticals treats narcolepsy and epilepsy and adds oncology drugs to that.
The base is drugs for sleep disorders: a narrow market with few patients, but treatment is lifelong and the medicine is dispensed under a strictly controlled programme, which in itself makes copies hard to introduce. The company managed to move patients onto a new version of the drug before the patent on the old one expired.
The second part is an antiepileptic based on cannabidiol used in children with severe forms. The third is oncology, acquired together with a specialist company. Risks: patent disputes, dependence on a few drugs and execution of its own development. The company pays no dividend.
