Allison Transmission makes automatic gearboxes for lorries, buses and military vehicles.
In heavy vehicles an automatic gearbox is not a luxury: a refuse truck or a concrete mixer pulls away hundreds of times a shift, and manual shifting wears out both driver and machine. The company holds a near-monopoly position in that niche, because few alternatives withstand such duty.
The installed base supplies the other half of income: parts and repairs are bought for decades. The long-term question is electrification: an electric lorry needs a gearbox differently, and the company is developing electric axles. Risks: truck production, defence orders and the pace of the shift to electric drive. A dividend is paid and buybacks are active.
