Ball makes aluminium beverage cans — billions a year for a few large customers.
A can is an undifferentiated product, and plants are built next to filling lines: hauling air in empty cans is expensive. Hence a geography tied to the customer and multi-year contracts where the aluminium price is passed through while the company earns on turning metal into a product.
Demand has shifted in the can's favour: it recycles better than plastic, and drinks makers are switching under pressure from regulators and shoppers. The flip side is dependence on a few customers whose volumes determine plant utilisation. The company sold its aerospace division and concentrated on packaging. A dividend is paid and buybacks are active.
