BioMarin treats rare inherited diseases — where patients are few and no treatment existed at all.
The rare disease market works unlike the ordinary one: patients number in thousands rather than millions, but there are no competitors and a course costs hundreds of thousands. Diagnosis is genetic, so a patient can be found directly and no large sales force is needed.
The main product of recent years is a drug for achondroplasia, a bone growth disorder in children: it lets a child grow closer to normal, and treatment lasts years. The rest of the portfolio is enzyme replacement therapy for other rare syndromes. Risks: insurer decisions on covering expensive treatment, competition and trial outcomes. The company pays no dividend.
