Generac makes home standby generators — a purchase made after the power has already gone out.
Demand is unusually shaped: it flares after a hurricane or an ice storm, when a district spends days without electricity, and subsides in quiet years. Revenue is therefore prone to swings weakly connected to the economic cycle and strongly connected to the weather.
The long-term support is steadier: the grid is ageing, outages grow more frequent, and a home becomes more dependent on electricity — heating, the car, working from home. The share of homes with a standby generator remains low, and that is the runway. Risks: a calm season without storms, dealer inventories and competition from battery storage. The company pays no dividend.
