Nordson makes equipment that dispenses adhesive, sealant and coatings precisely on a production line.
The task sounds simple and is hard to do: place a drop of adhesive of a set volume in a set spot to fractions of a millimetre, thousands of times an hour, for years. Such equipment costs little relative to the whole line, but its failure stops production — so it is chosen on reliability.
The installed base supplies the other half of income: nozzles, filters, spares and service are bought continuously and carry a higher margin than the machines themselves. Customers are packaging, electronics, medical devices and construction. Risks: the industrial cycle, capital budgets and the price of the acquisitions the company grows by. The dividend has been raised for many consecutive years.
