NiSource supplies gas and electricity to Indiana and neighbouring states — and has received data centre requests for unprecedented capacity.
Profit is set by the rate base and the allowed return, not by the volume of energy sold. The capital programme — replacing gas mains, retiring coal plants, building wind and solar — is scheduled years ahead and approved by the regulator.
A new circumstance changes the scale: data centre connection requests in the state run to gigawatts, and that requires both generation and networks. Contracts are structured so that the cost falls on the customer rather than on other ratepayers — otherwise the regulator would not agree. Risks: commission decisions, borrowing costs and executing large construction. A dividend is paid.
