Nutanix turns ordinary servers into a single pool of computing — a cloud inside the company's own data centre.
The software combines compute, storage and networking so that an administrator does not configure them separately: capacity is added by installing another server. That suits organisations that keep data on their own premises because of regulation or cost rather than in a public cloud.
The market turned sharply when the dominant competitor changed its licensing terms after a change of ownership: customers began seriously considering a replacement for the first time in years. The product is sold by subscription, so revenue is predictable. Risks: competition from public clouds and the length of migration at large customers. The company pays no dividend.
