Reliance cuts and processes metal to order — a service centre between the mill and the workshop.
A mill sells by the wagonload, while a workshop needs twenty sheets of a particular size tomorrow. A service centre buys in bulk, cuts to size and delivers in small lots. The mark-up for that is high, because the customer pays for speed and precision rather than for the metal.
Orders are small and very numerous — thousands a day, none of them decisive. That fragmentation is the protection: price is not dictated by a large buyer. The company grows by acquiring family-owned service centres. Risks: metal prices, which affect inventory values, and industrial demand. The dividend has been raised for many consecutive years and buybacks are active.
