Federal funds rate

The reference price of money in dollars, set by the US Federal Reserve.

How to read the number

It defines the cost of funding worldwide: dollar borrowing everywhere is priced from it, including by borrowers who never operate in the United States.

When the metric lies

The expected path of the rate is already in prices, so assets move on the deviation from expectations rather than on the decision itself.
