Risk capacity

The objective ability to absorb a loss without damaging one's plans: set by horizon, stability of income and obligations rather than by willingness to endure.

How to read the number

It is kept apart from tolerance on purpose: a person can be perfectly calm about swings and still have no business risking money that is needed on a known date.

When the metric lies

It is not constant. As the date the money was saved for approaches, capacity falls regardless of what the account shows or how the owner feels.

Also known as: capacity to bear loss
