Tap issue

The issuer selling an additional amount of an already traded issue, without changing its terms.

How to read the number

It increases the amount outstanding and usually improves liquidity: a larger issue trades more often and with a tighter spread between orders.

When the metric lies

The new amount is sold at the market price and weighs on the quote on the day of sale. For a holder it is somebody else's supply appearing inside their own bond.

Also known as: tap, reopening of an issue
