Voting share
A share carrying the right to vote on an item of business as of the date the list of participants is drawn.
How to read the number
Quorum and results are counted against voting shares rather than all shares in issue: a preferred share votes on one item and not on another, so the denominator moves with the question.
When the metric lies
Treasury stock does not vote, which is why a controlling holder's share of the votes is often noticeably larger than its share of the capital.
