Willis Towers Watson arranges corporate insurance and calculates pension obligations — a broker and consultant, not an insurer.
A broker takes on no risk: it arranges cover for the client in the market and earns a commission from the insurer or a fee from the client. That is a fundamentally different economics — a major hurricane hits the insurer, while the broker still earns in such a year, because rising rates raise its commission too.
The second half is consulting: actuarial valuation of pension obligations, employee benefit programmes, risk assessment. That is steady income under long engagements, largely detached from the insurance cycle. Risks: competition for clients with two larger brokers and dependence on employment, which sets the size of benefit programmes. The company pays a dividend and buys back stock.
