Lincoln Electric makes welding machines and the consumables they use — electrodes and wire.
The model is the instrument-and-consumable one: the machine is bought once and lasts for years, while wire and electrodes are consumed continuously. A welder gets used to specific equipment and material, and changing supplier in a factory requires requalifying the welds — hence inertia in demand.
Customers are shipbuilding, pipelines, machinery and construction. Demand is cyclical, but consumables smooth the troughs. The growing line is robotic welding, displacing manual work because of a shortage of qualified welders. Risks: the industrial cycle, steel prices and labour costs. The dividend has been raised for many consecutive years.
