Repligen makes the filters and columns used to purify biologic drugs during manufacturing.
A biologic drug is produced by living cells, and the resulting liquid must be separated, concentrated and purified. The company makes the consumables for those steps — membranes, columns, sensors. They are written into the manufacturing procedure and into the drug's registration dossier, so replacing one requires regulatory approval.
Hence a supplier position locked in for the medicine's whole life, and revenue that grows with production volume rather than with equipment sales. The industry lived through a severe downturn: customers stockpiled during the pandemic and stopped ordering for years. Risks: the inventory cycle, biotech funding and demand in China. The company pays no dividend.
