LNG

Natural gas chilled into liquid form so that it can be carried by ship.

How to read the number

Liquefaction detaches gas from the pipeline: the market becomes global and the price starts depending on demand at the other end of the world.

When the metric lies

Liquefaction plants and import terminals take years to build, so supply cannot answer a price spike. A shortage is closed by outbidding someone else's cargo, not by producing more.

Also known as: liquefied natural gas
