Markel insures unusual risks, invests its reserves in equities and buys operating businesses outright.
The structure deliberately echoes a well-known model: insurance provides money that can be deployed until claims are paid, and that money is invested in more than bonds. Specialty insurance is more profitable than the mass market because expertise sets the price rather than a rate table.
The second part is a portfolio of ordinary industrial and service companies bought outright: equipment manufacturing, construction services, consumer goods. They provide cash flow unconnected to the insurance cycle. The third is a large equity portfolio whose revaluation makes reported profit swing widely. The company pays no dividend as a matter of principle.
