WESCO supplies electrical and industrial materials — from cable to data centre equipment.
A distributor holds hundreds of thousands of items in stock and delivers what the contractor needs tomorrow. The mark-up is modest, so inventory turnover and branch network density decide: competing on the price of cable is pointless, competing on availability is not.
The growing part is supplying utilities and data centres: upgrading power networks and building computing capacity require enormous volumes of cable, switchgear and transformers, and lead times became a competitive advantage. Risks: the industrial and construction cycles, copper prices, working capital tied up in inventory. A dividend is paid.
