How to read analyst research — Fundamental analysis
Содержание · 4

A research note ends with a target price, and that is usually what gets remembered. It is the one part of the document you can skip.

What a target price is

The output of a model under stated assumptions about revenue, margin, discount rate and growth. Change any of them and the conclusion changes.

The value of a note lies in the assumptions themselves: they show what the analyst believes and where you might disagree — Price and value: how a market quote differs from what a business is worth.

What to look at

The forecast for key metrics and how far it differs from current levels. If the model assumes the margin doubles, the question reduces to why it would.

The discount rate: with a high key rate, valuations of companies whose profits lie far ahead fall mechanically.

The caveats and risks — usually at the end and usually the most substantive part.

The consensus

The average target price across analysts is not a more accurate forecast but a more averaged one. It is useful as an indicator of market expectations: price moves are driven by facts deviating from expectations — Company news: what actually changes a valuation.

What to do

Use a note as a source of facts and structure, and form the conclusion yourself.
