Amkor packages and tests finished dies — the final stage of making a chip.
A wafer of dies must be cut, each die placed in a package, contacts brought out and function verified. Chip designers and foundries outsource that stage: it is capital-intensive, labour-intensive and gives the designer no competitive advantage.
Its value grows with packaging complexity: modern approaches combine several dies in one package, turning packaging into an engineering problem rather than an operation. A substantial share of revenue comes from a few large customers. Risks: the semiconductor cycle, customer concentration and the geography of manufacturing in Asia. The dividend is small.
