STERIS sterilises medical instruments and devices — a service without which an operating theatre does not function.
The company both sells sterilisation equipment to hospitals and performs the service itself: makers of single-use devices ship product to its sites, where it is processed before going on to clinics. The second is more profitable and steadier — a flow tied to procedure volumes rather than to purchasing budgets.
There are few sterilisation sites in the country and opening a new one is hard: it needs permits and local consent, since the process uses reactive agents. Hence a bottleneck that gives the company a position difficult to bypass. Risks: environmental claims against sites, hospital reimbursement and energy costs. A dividend is paid and raised.
