First Solar makes solar panels with its own technology and manufactures them in the United States rather than Asia.
The panels are made not from crystalline silicon, as almost everyone else's are, but from a thin film of cadmium telluride. That is a separate supply chain independent of Chinese polysilicon, and it also performs better in hot climates, where a silicon panel loses more output.
The economics rest on two external conditions: tariffs and restrictions on imported panels, and government support for domestic manufacturing. Both are political, and a change in them shifts profitability faster than any technological development. Orders are contracted years ahead by large solar plant operators. The company pays no dividend.
