Hershey makes chocolate and snacks, and its fate is decided by the price of cocoa — an input with no substitute.
The brand here is exceptionally strong: a chocolate bar is an impulse purchase at the till, and the choice is made by recognition rather than price comparison. That allowed decades of raising prices slightly faster than inflation. The company is controlled by a charitable trust, which puts it out of reach of a takeover.
The vulnerability lies elsewhere: cocoa grows in a narrow belt of West Africa, and a bad harvest or tree disease multiplies its price. Hedging softens the blow for a year or so but does not remove it. The second challenge is falling consumption of sweets under the influence of new weight-loss drugs, whose effect the industry is still measuring. Hershey pays a dividend.
