Costco earns from membership fees rather than markup: goods sell close to cost, and the profit comes from the subscription to shop there.

The model is unusual for retail. Markup is deliberately held low and capped by internal rule, the assortment is cut to a few thousand items rather than tens of thousands, and goods are sold in bulk packs. That produces enormous turnover per item, a strong buying position and prices that are hard to match.

Almost all operating profit comes from membership fees. Hence the two figures the market follows: member count and renewal rate, which stays consistently high both in the United States and abroad. The Kirkland private label takes a growing share of sales and works both as a margin source and as a reason to renew.

The weak point is that same thin markup: the company cannot offset rising labour and logistics costs with price without breaking its own rule. Expansion is slow, club by club, and the opening cadence directly caps revenue growth. The regular dividend is small, though the company periodically pays large special distributions.
