Keurig Dr Pepper joined fizzy drinks with coffee pods — two different businesses in one company.
The drinks half consists of brands not owned by the market's two giants: Dr Pepper, Canada Dry, Snapple, 7UP in some territories. The industry's usual logic applies: brand strength, shelf access and an in-house distribution system that puts product into shops and restaurants without an intermediary.
The coffee half is built on the machine-and-consumable principle: the brewer sells at almost no mark-up and the pods make the profit. That model works while patents and licences control compatibility; the expiry of patent protection let cheap compatible pods onto the market and compressed the margin. Risks: coffee and aluminium prices, and the shift in taste from soda to energy drinks. The company pays a dividend.
