Kraft Heinz owns the brands from the middle of the store — ketchup, processed cheese, ready meals — and is looking for a way to make them grow again.
The company was created as a bet on radical cost cutting: the theory was that strong brands could be milked while expenses were pared to the bone. The calculation failed — saving on advertising and product development undermined the brands themselves, and writing down their value became one of the largest such charges in the industry.
The structural problem runs deeper than management: shoppers are moving away from processed shelf-stable food toward fresh products and retailers' own labels, which offer the same for less. Strong positions remain in condiments, where the name genuinely decides the choice. The company announced a split into parts with different futures and pays a high dividend.
