Lockheed Martin is the largest US defence contractor: its revenue is almost entirely government and therefore predictable.
The flagship programme is the F-35 fighter: development, production and — more importantly — sustaining the fleet for decades. Such a programme gives revenue visibility unattainable in civilian industry, while making the company hostage to a single customer decision.
The other lines are missile systems, space, helicopters and air defence. Demand is set by geopolitics and defence budgets rather than the economic cycle: defence spending is not cut first in a downturn. Export sales to allies add volume and require government approval.
An industry feature is fixed-price contracts: overruns fall on the contractor, and during inflation that hits margins directly. Lockheed pays a high dividend and buys back stock actively, which makes it an income name as well.
