Lattice Semiconductor makes small reprogrammable chips with very low power consumption.
Programmable logic allows a chip's behaviour to be changed after the board has already been built: an engineer writes new configuration instead of ordering a new die. The company deliberately moved away from large expensive devices to small ones, where competitors are less present.
Such chips perform auxiliary but obligatory functions: power sequencing, verifying firmware integrity at start-up, bridging connectors. Demand comes from industrial automation, communications, cars and servers. Risks: the semiconductor cycle, customer inventories and competition from large programmable logic makers. The company pays no dividend.
