ON Semiconductor makes power chips and sensors for cars — components that manage electricity rather than computation.
A power semiconductor converts and distributes current: in an electric car it determines range, because every percentage point lost in conversion is kilometres of driving. The company bet on silicon carbide, a material that withstands higher voltage and works more efficiently than ordinary silicon.
The second line is image sensors for driver assistance systems: cameras that recognise lane markings and obstacles. Both lines are tied to carmaking, which went through a revision of its electric vehicle plans — orders came in below expectations and the industry is working through excess inventory. Risks: the automotive cycle and competition in silicon carbide. The company pays no dividend.
