Paychex runs payroll for small businesses and, like its peers, earns interest on client funds.
Customers are companies with dozens rather than thousands of employees and no accounting department of their own. The service is mandatory, errors cost penalties, and switching provider is convenient only at a fiscal-year boundary — hence high retention and predictable revenue.
The second income is interest on funds passing through the company between debiting the employer and paying the employee. It rises with rates, which is unusual for a software business. The figure read as a barometer is client headcount. Customers are small businesses that rarely change payroll provider: switching requires migrating tax history and carries a risk of error. Paychex pays a high dividend.
