Qnity makes materials for chip manufacturing — chemistry and components spun out of a chemical group.
Making a chip involves hundreds of steps, and each needs its own material: polishing slurries, photoresists, cleaning solutions, substrates. They cost little relative to the finished wafer, but a defect caused by a material ruins the whole batch, so a supplier goes through long qualification and is then not changed for years.
Hence the position typical of this layer of the industry: growth follows total chip output rather than any one manufacturer's fortunes, and increasing process complexity raises the number of steps and therefore demand. Risks: the semiconductor cycle, export restrictions and the costs of standing alone after the separation.
