Xylem is about water: pumps, wastewater treatment and meters that report readings on their own.
Customers are water utilities and municipalities whose infrastructure in many cities was built more than half a century ago and loses a noticeable share of water to leaks. Replacement is funded from tariffs and government programmes, so demand is steadier than industrial demand and less dependent on the economic cycle.
The growing part is metering: a meter reports its readings itself, and analysing the data shows exactly where a pipe is leaking before the street floods. That software line is more profitable than making pumps. Risks: long municipal procurement, city budgets and component costs. The company pays a dividend.
