Flowserve makes pumps, valves and seals for refining, chemicals and power.
A pump in a refinery runs for decades in harsh conditions, and its failure shuts the unit down entirely. Equipment is therefore bought on reliability and serviced by the same supplier: spares and repair make up a larger and more profitable share of revenue than the original sale.
The installed base worldwide is the main asset: it yields recurring income that barely depends on whether new plants are being built. Demand for new equipment is cyclical and follows the capital spending of oil, gas and chemicals. Risks: oil prices, other people's project schedules and contract execution. A dividend is paid.
