About the coin
The premise is to tell a human apart from a program. An Orb device scans the iris and issues World ID, a digital proof of personhood, after which the raw biometric template is not retained, according to the developers. WLD is the network's token, distributed to verified participants. The initiative comes from Tools for Humanity, co-founded by Sam Altman; the biometric collection has drawn objections from data-protection regulators in several countries. Proof of personhood as a field gained prominence as generative models spread.
