Rubrik makes backup designed on the assumption that an attacker is already inside the network.

Ransomware changed what a backup must do: the old enemy was a failed disk, the new one is an intruder who deliberately hunts down and encrypts the backups themselves. A copy is therefore made immutable, and the system shows the moment at which the data was still clean, so that exact state can be restored.

It is sold by subscription, so revenue is predictable and grows with the volume of protected data. It is bought by management rather than only by the operations team — recovery after an attack became a board-level question. Risks: competition from long-established backup vendors and cloud services, and losses during the growth phase. The company pays no dividend.
