Warner Bros. Discovery owns a studio and networks and is splitting into two companies with different futures.

The company was formed by a merger that brought enormous debt and a content library: the Warner Bros. studio, HBO and Discovery's cable networks. Linear television shrinks structurally and provides cash flow but not a future; streaming grows and only recently turned profitable.

Hence the decision to split: the declining cable networks separate from the studio and streaming so that each part is valued on its own nature — one as a cash-flow source, the other as a growth story. Debt is allocated between them, and exactly how is the key question for investors.

Risks: the success of individual films and series, the cost of sports rights, the pace of cable audience decline, and debt service. The company pays no dividend, directing cash into repayment.
