Crown Holdings makes aluminium beverage cans and steel containers for food.
A can is an undifferentiated product, so plants are built next to filling lines: hauling empty containers is expensive. Contracts run for years, the metal price is passed through, and the company earns on converting metal into a product and on capacity utilisation.
A substantial share of revenue comes from Europe and emerging markets, where canned drink consumption grows faster than in mature ones. The industry is closing surplus lines so as not to depress prices. Risks: beverage demand, energy costs, currency rates and debt. A separate line is aerosol cans and closures, where competitors are fewer and sealing requirements higher. The company pays a small dividend and buys back stock actively.
