CRH makes cement, aggregates and asphalt — materials uneconomic to haul far, so the market here is local.
The economics of these materials are set by distance: aggregate is cheap while transport is expensive, so a quarry serves a radius of a few dozen kilometres and is effectively a monopoly within it. Permitting a new quarry near a city is nearly impossible — hence durable pricing.
The company moved its primary listing to the United States, where a large share of revenue sits, and benefits from government infrastructure programmes: roads, bridges, industrial sites. Data-centre construction adds demand for concrete and foundations.
Risks: the housing cycle; weather, since asphalt simply is not laid in a wet quarter; and the cost of fuel and energy for cement kilns, the most energy-intensive part of production. The company grows by acquiring regional producers, pays a dividend and buys back stock.
